Finding my own unique style

Finding my own unique style quite by happy accident

Here's a short update to share a big personal breakthrough.

I've been trying to get started on my new YouTube channel and I have been running into a serious brick wall.

I have not been hitting any technical brick wall. I know enough about what I am doing to shoot, edit and publish my videos with reasonable success. All the infrastructure is in place.

I've done all the tutorials I need to do and then some.

No, my issues are all between my ears. It hasn't been easy for me to start due to my constant battles with my old enemy perfectionism.

This week I had a major personal breakthrough.

I was out filming yet again (I will be doing most videos outdoors) and trying to get it as right as I possible could. I tried scripts, bullet-points, even narrating behind B-roll footage. But I wasn't happy with any of it as usual. It wasn't like the idealised YouTube style I was trying to emulate.

I was even having flashbacks to my bad old days. I had all but given up on the day's session but wanted to try a few more tests on my camera positions.

Fed up to the back teeth with it all, I went with no plan other than chatting to the camera about a couple of random topics. Then I went home.

Reviewing the footage on the PC gave me the breakthrough insight I've been looking for.

I'm sure you have already guessed what it was. Yep, the last bits of random footage were awesome. With no pressure to perform I was 100% me and do you know what? It worked for me. It is in fact the exact same style I use when I deliver my popular and successful live online training. Doh! Why didn't I try it earlier?

Anyway, I've done it! I have found my personal unique style. People will either love it or loathe it but it will be 100% me.

I'm going for perfect imperfection. I'm not even going to edit that much - leave it messy and human. If something isn't working, try something different.

I finally managed to get out of my own way so watch this space for the YT channel launch - coming soon.

All the best to you and yours
