Eat every "Elephant" one bite at a time

Even the biggest goals and obstacles can be conquered if you take them one "bite" at a time

Hi there

We’ve all felt like this at some point - I know I have - often.

We find ourselves staring at a massive self-development project and feeling like we’re trying to climb Mount Everest in the dark while wearing flip-flops.

It’s overwhelming, we’re unsure where to start, and we even question whether we can tackle such a massive task at all.

But here’s a big little secret.

Even the biggest goals and obstacles can be conquered if you take them one step or "bite" at a time.

Think of it like eating an elephant - you can only do it one bite at a time. It’s all about patience, consistency and planning.

Just for clarity - these are metaphorical elephants - I don't condone or encourage the eating of any real elephants at any time or in any place 🙂.

So, how do you do this?

Step 1 - Define Your "Elephant"

Start by identifying what your big project is all about. Is it learning a new skill, gaining self-confidence, starting a new job, writing a book, or maybe even launching your own business?

Whatever it is, get clear on what success looks like for you.

This is your “North Star” or guiding principle. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Step 2 - Break It Down

Now take that giant scary goal and chop it down into smaller, more manageable pieces.

If you’re writing a book, perhaps it’s one chapter per week – whatever makes most sense to you. If you’re learning something new, focus on one module or topic at a time.

Step 3 - Choose a First Chunk and Get Going

As the old saying goes, “The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.”

Set a deadline, gather your resources and take that first step. Congratulations - you’re now on your way.

Step4 - Set Milestones

Each subsequent small chunk (or step) should have its own mini-deadline or milestone. When you achieve each small step, you have gained a win.

Celebrate these wins! They’re crucial for maintaining motivation and keeping the momentum going. Those small wins all add up.

Small wins are fuel for your ongoing journey plus they will get you into the habit of succeeding.

Step 5 - Stay Patient and Consistent

The long journey does indeed start with a single step, but you have to keep taking steps all the way to the end.

Consistency is key here.

Make small progress every day—it adds up faster than you think!

Remember the tortoise and the hare? Slow and steady wins the race. Lots of animal metaphors this month – hmmm?

Step 6 - Reflect & Adjust

Regularly check-in with yourself to see what’s working and what’s not.

Don’t be afraid to tweak your approach as needed; flexibility is also your friend on this journey.

Remember, every big achievement starts with those first tiny steps and you’ve now got everything you need to make it happen!

Here’s to taking that first bite and wishing you success with every step.
