Don’t spread yourself too thinly

Andrew Pope • 13 June 2023

Be wary of taking too much on - no matter how interesting - it's a slippery slope to disaster.

I have had to slow my output down to a crawl for a while. This is my first written post for quite a while.

I drove myself metaphorically into the ground but potentially, without the slowdown, into the actual ground. Not good.

It’s all too easy to lose sight of the forest when you’re surrounded by trees. It’s something I need to be more aware of.

I love to work hard, and I love to produce content.

I also have a successful day job which I love as well.

I love making videos and I love writing.

I love too many things.

Throw in a tendency to be attracted to “bright, shiny things” like side-projects, hobbies, pastimes and other assorted distractions and it's way too easy to get overwhelmed.

I don’t have a procrastination problem so much as a “try to do it all problem.”

I sat myself down for a good talking to and hit the reset button.

I decided I need to focus on my one big thing (+ the day job for right now).

There are now very long-term targets for some areas. For instance, YouTube & Twitter are now right on the backburner, and I’ll build them up as time/energy allows.

I am going to focus on my writing first and foremost. That's my one big thing - my writing. My “EI & You” blog, and this one too, will take rightful precedence.

All other things will flow, when appropriate, from the written material – including YT, a podcast and some online courses.

So, I need to focus on one main thing – my writing.

This will also allow me to engage with my community more too as that is also a written medium.

I feel better now and I’m ready to reengage with the world via my writing. Whatever else happens, happens.

Writing this did me some good.

Perhaps it will help you too – don’t spread yourself too thinly!

All the best to you and yours
